Ahead of International Women in Engineering Day which is Thursday 22nd June 2022, we asked our Trainee MEP Quantity Surveyor, Karen Alexander a few questions about her role within the Michael Nugent Ltd team and her general day to day duties:

Were you always interested in being a QS / if not what made you choose the career pathway?

Quantity Surveying was always something I had thought about as I had previously worked in the construction industry in different roles, but it wasn’t until I joined the Michael Nugent Ltd team that I found out how interesting it was. I was lucky to get the chance to progress my skills working alongside our Senior QS gaining more knowledge and responsibilities.

Tell us a bit about your typical duties in a day?

My typical day to day duties include budget costs, final accounts, compiling internal & external reports, various meetings, payment certs, liaising with other companies & suppliers, procurement, tracking costs, take offs, review of costs etc. Each day is different and being able to prioritise, manage your time and problem solve is key. I am heavily involved in numerous contracts and work with multiple team members.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

I hope to see myself still working with MNL and continuing to progress within the company. There are many opportunities to grow within the team which is a huge strong point the company have. I am excited to continue my progression with the MNL team furthering my career in the next few years.

What advice would you give to females who are interested in a career within the Engineering industry?

I would advise any female thinking about a career in the engineering industry to absolutely go for it, you will gain invaluable skills and experience. The Engineering Industry is still quite male dominated and definitely needs more women involved. In the most recent years, we have definitely seen an increase of women within the engineering industry and it is incredible to be part of. Within the MNL team we have multiple female team members all within different job roles and we hope to see more enrolling in the future.

Karen’s manager Patricia McElhone, Team Lead QS said, “Karen is an ambitious young woman who has always been keen to expand on her experience.
