Michael Nugent Ltd are delighted to offer multiple placement opportunities to students!

At Michael Nugent Ltd we are passionate about students joining our MNL Team to begin their career journey. Contracts Director, Brendan Gildernew said, “It is a fantastic opportunity for both the students and the company to be able to offer multiple placement opportunities. It is extremely rewarding for ourselves that previous apprentices and placement students have continued their career journey with ourselves upon finishing their courses”.

To announce our placement opportunities we asked MEP Design Technical Assistant, Scott Sittlington a few questions about his placement year within our Digital Construction team.

What course are you currently studying?

BSc (Hons) Energy at Ulster University.

What made you choose your current course?

After much deliberation I settled on BSc (Hons) Energy as I felt the global trend across all industries was shifting towards renewable and sustainable practices. The Energy course seemed to provide a good balance between mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering contextual to the energy and construction industries which has benefited me greatly in my current role.

What made you choose MNL for your placement year?

MNL have a fantastic reputation within the Engineering industry, and with offices in Belfast and Pomeroy there was great flexibility with living arrangements.

Tell us a bit about your typical duties in a day?

A typical day for me involves mechanical & electrical service design and the subsequent co-ordination of these designs with other disciplines and members of the design team. I produce drawings, mark ups, liaise with other companies and update existing drawings.  The great part of my role is that no two days are the same. My work spans across dozens of projects, from small plantrooms to multi-storey hotels and office buildings. All of my work is completed across the top industry software.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

Having put in the hours and been offered a permanent position with the company, I hope to see myself still working with MNL but in a more senior capacity.

What advice would you give someone considering an a placement year?

I would recommend anyone thinking about a placement to absolutely go out and get one. The industry experience and skills you learn will be invaluable after graduation when you are searching for a graduate job.

Scott’s mentor Gareth Smyth, MEP Design Manager said, “Scott is an ambitious individual who is eager to learn, which is fantastic to see! He has developed incredibly over the past few months and we are delighted he will be continuing his career with ourselves upon graduation”.
