Ruairi continues his role within the Commercial team after successfully completing his placement!

Ruairi has successfully completed his work placement within our Commercial team as an Estimating Technical Assistant. We are delighted Ruairi is now working one day a week with the team whilst he completes his final year studies.

Ruairi, tell us a bit about your course, what are you currently studying?

I am currently studying a Level 5 Foundation Degree in Construction Engineering with Surveying at Belfast met in the Millfield campus. The course duration is two years with an optional two year top up in Ulster University. The course includes and work placement in which I am currently completing. I began placement full time in July which reduced to four days a week and one day in college at the end of September. The course itself covers a wide range of construction topics and is providing me with knowledge to assist my career within the construction industry.

What made you choose Michael Nugent Ltd for your placement year?

I chose Michael Nugent Ltd for my placement year because it is a well-run company with an excellent reputation within the Construction industry. In Michael Nugent’s I have had the opportunity to work on both large commercial and specialist projects. I have been able to learn the building services aspect to construction which provides me with a better overall knowledge and opportunity to branch out into mechanical or electrical services.

Tell us a bit about your role within the Estimating department and which duties you like most?

As technical estimating assistant I have printed and organised drawings for new projects. I have completed take-offs both mechanically and electrically for large multi-storey buildings while controlling documentation by checking off latest revisions. I have used the Amtech estimating software to input information for such projects for example, inputting labour hours, material prices and so on. I have learned how to complete excel quote trackers allowing me to compare quotes received from manufacturers. I’ve sent out enquiries for large commercial and small works projects. I have communicated with manufacturers and contractors regarding any queries they’ve had and I have been in charge of sending out RFI’s to Main Contractors such as; Gilbert-Ash, Grahams and Farrans. I have taken part in project meetings and have learned how discounted prices on quotes work.  I have been in charge of admin work and become more computer literate using new company software I hadn’t used before. I was given responsibility within the estimation team helping the team meet deadlines and to maintain a competitive price. I have learned how mechanical and electrical systems work and the requirements for modern day buildings.

Do you have any advice to students who will undertaking a placement year?

My advice for students undertaking a placement year is to make sure you are punctual and willing to learn. From my experience if you are willing to learn Michael Nugent’s will provide you with the experience and knowledge needed to become a competent construction professional.

Finally, Ruairi what is your top tip for managing your work balance whilst attending college?

My top tip for managing work balance while attending college is to organise yourself and take each task one step at a time. Try to stay on of things to prevent a build up of work and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
