Great Progress at Queens University, Belfast Iconic Student Union

Michael Nugent Ltd are delighted to be providing the MEP services and Building Information Modelling (BIM) Level 2 with the model completed to LOD 5 design services for Queens University new Student Centre. The £30m redevelopment of the Student Union landmark project will transform the student hub enriching it with more modern facilities to support student life.

The four-storey student hub will have student guidance facilities, open entrance space, informal learning zones, club rooms, supporting offices, multi-purpose hall, Students’ Union Bar, Mandela Hall, catering and retail outlets. The centre will provide students with informed support throughout their time at university providing advice for employment opportunities. The world class facilities will cater for 25,000 students in Belfast providing a vibrant, social atmosphere. Students, staff and visitors will benefit from the open space environment which is to encourage co-working.

This is a major project for Queens University. The new Students’ Union will replace the original building which opened in 1967, later having refurbishments in 2005. Working alongside main contractors Felix O’Hare, Michael Nugent Ltd are providing the full MEP services and BIM Level 2 co-ordination at the Student Union project.

Michael Nugent Ltd are utilizing MMC, DFMA, off-site Fabrication and Lean construction techniques for the first-class project delivery. It is expected the iconic Student Union will be ready next year for the 2022/2023 academic year.

Designing, planning, manufacturing and the pre-assembly of components prior to arriving on site has many benefits for the project. The Pre-Fabricated units are stored in our factory, tested and commissioned before they arrive on site providing the highest quality service by our experienced team of engineers and technicians.
