Ken Henning, MBE, Vice Chair of NIFRS Board said: “Work is scheduled to take a year to complete and we plan to have Firefighters using the new facility in early 2019. “The safety of our Firefighters and the public is our top priority and this new training facility will enable a range of live burn training scenarios from high rise building fires to domestic and commercial property fires. This is a milestone moment in this key Programme for Government priority”

Chair of the Planning Committee, Councillor Cáthal Mallaghan, believes the decision signals the beginning of significant investment which will impact positively on the long-term economic growth of Mid Ulster: “The Desertcreat site has been earmarked for this kind of development for some years and the plans which have now been approved will bring substantial employment from construction stage through to the centre’s commissioning and its on-going operation.

Michael Nugent Ltd are proud to be involved in this prestigious project which will deliver a facility suited to the training needs of Firefighters for years to come. We have already started on site with works progressing well.

Design work for Phase 2 of the Learning and Development Centre will commence in due course following the appointment of a team and will cover the remainder of the training infrastructure works.  Phase 2 has a value of £40m and following all necessary government and planning approvals it is anticipated that work could commence in summer 2019.
