Michael Nugent Ltd Awarded Landmark £28.7m St. Patrick’s Academy Contract

The long awaited plans for the brand new St. Patrick’s Academy in Dungannon are finally proceeding after years of delays. The Grammar school’s £28.7m development was put on hold for a lengthy spell but has now been given the go-ahead by the Mid-Ulster Council. Michael Nugent Ltd will be providing all Mechanical services for this eagerly anticipated education project.

St. Patrick’s Academy was established in September 2003 following the amalgamation of St Patrick’s Girls’ and St Patrick’s Boys’ Academies. The existing buildings have become dated and no longer fit for purpose, as generations of pupils have moved between the school’s warren of pre-fab buildings and temporary mobile classrooms, some of which date back to 1962. To demonstrate the scale of the issue, for the past two decades more than half of all classes have been taught in mobile buildings.

A significant upgrade was required to meet the rising demands of the community for bigger and better education facilities. The new school build will provide just this, accommodating approximately 1320 pupils and will be built to allow for  further expansion in the future. The new site will have five tennis courts, badminton courts, a dedicated assembly hall, as well as a sports hall, and specialist rooms for art, music, technology, drama and media studies.

Highlights of the new building also include an internal courtyard which can be used for outdoor musical recitals, an enhanced library overlooking the courtyard, a new oratory, innovatively wide and spacious corridors, an extended dining area with a cathedral roof and a mezzanine floor, and bright, airy classrooms.

Michael Nugent Ltd will provide a full mechanical services installation for this significant project which is due to be completed by Summer 2018. The school will be a great boost the local economy of Dungannon as it will not only provide jobs to the local area, but also community facilities such as the sports hall and playing fields, as well as first class education opportunities for generations to come.
