Old See House

With a cutting-edge design and a modern finish, it’s easy to see how the Old See House mental health facility, Belfast, scooped an another award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

The building – designed by RPP Architects with Richard Murphy Architects – provides an outstanding facility for those with mental health illnesses both in its North Belfast location and beyond.

Its facilities – which were completed in June 2014 – combine three services that had never before been co-located: psychiatric consultation space for outpatients, a day centre and an eight-bedroom residential area for short stays.

But it’s the design and layout of these services that give the facility its award-winning status. Outpatient and day patient spaces span from a central entrance foyer, where a double height living area creates an attractive pivot for the rest of the building.

Short stay facilities are housed in an adjoining building with a separate entrance. This offers seclusion from the bustle of the day centre for residential patients, nurturing recuperation and promoting comfort.

Landscaped and walled gardens with seating areas, walkways and water features are also interspersed throughout the site, while glass paneling creates a sense of bringing the outdoors inside.

Working alongside RPP Architects, Richard Murphy Architects and other contractors, Michael Nugent fitted all mechanical installations to this new build. The RIBA Regional Award will therefore add to our already impressive range of award-winning projects.

Founded in 1834, the RIBA promotes advancements in architecture by championing better building through the creative use of arts and sciences. Their Regional Awards are reserved for buildings that improve design quality and enhance community life.

The award therefore marks RPP and Richard Murphy architects’ achievement in designing a premium building that will enrich both the environment by which it is surrounded and the community of patients by which it is visited.
