Rory McIlroy Opens Daisy Lodge
Golf champ Rory McIlroy has officially opened our project at the NICFC’s short break centre, Daisy Lodge
Certainly one of the most famous appearances we’ve had at the opening of a Michael Nugent project, golf star Rory McIlroy attended the official opening of Daisy Lodge last Tuesday.
The Ryder Cup Winner and World No. 1 has been an advocate for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s (NICFC) short break centre in Newcastle since his first visit at Christmas, when our works at the site were in full swing.
Michael Nugent provided a full mechanical installation for this impressive £3m new build. The facility provides a place for families affected by cancer to get some much-needed rest, recuperation and quality time together.
With a stunning mid-Mourne location surrounded by woodland and with a modern yet homely appearance on the interior, the centre is truly one of a kind. It offers six double family rooms, a well being centre, cinema, restaurant, play areas and games room, communal lounge and therapy suits, ensuring its function is met with the finest of facilities.
And it was the function of Daisy Lodge that inspired McIlroy to not only appear at the official opening, but donate £1m from his charitable foundation to the centre. Speaking in interviews with the Belfast Telegraph and The Independent, the four-time major winner said he was extremely fortunate to be able to support Daisy Lodge financially.
He explained his desire to “give back” to the NICFC after realising the affect cancer diagnosis or loss can have on the brothers, sisters and parents of an ill child. His generous donation will go a long way in the continual care of tired, stressed and bereaved families.
Yet it’s not just world-famous golfers that Daisy Lodge is attracting. The centre has already gained the attention of multiple awards programmes having been given a Taste of Ulster Award for its locally-sourced nutritious meals; a Green Apple Award for its environmental sustainability and a Construction Excellence Award for its design and build.
Michael Nugent is delighted our project is generating such interest from high profile celebrities, the media and awards bodies – as each of these will be relayed into growing funds for the NICFC. We continue to wish the organisation and the staff at Daisy Lodge all the best for the future.
