Michael Nugent Wins M&E Contract for NI Hospice

We’re delighted to announce Michael Nugent has been awarded the M&E Services Contract for the prestigious new Somerton House hospice in Belfast

Works are getting underway at Somerton House – the new hospice development in North Belfast – where Michael Nugent is proud to be delivering mechanical and electrical services.

The project will see the rebuilding of the current facility that has recently become unfit for purpose. Offering a modern and welcoming space, the new development will be a groundbreaking facility for the terminally ill that will change the face of palliative care in Northern Ireland.

And as the first major M&E contract undertaken by Michael Nugent since the opening of our new electrical division, the project will also be a groundbreaking move for our company.

With 18 single en-suite bedrooms, quiet spaces, a courtyard and activity areas, the centre will be provide the best in professional care. It will also offer a day hospice and fully equipped outpatients department.

The facility’s physiotherapy and occupational therapy rooms will use the latest technologies to ensure each patient is met with the best medical attention; while children and relative areas will create a comforting place for patients’ families. Chaplaincy services will also be offered to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of all of the building’s visitors.

Importantly, the upper floor of the two-storey hospice will house an education and research wing – where libraries and lecture theatres will enable staff to remain at the forefront of medical knowledge. The building will also contain an art studio and gallery, where visitors can enjoy therapeutic creative activities.

Michael Nugent will be providing a full range mechanical and electrical services to the new build, including all heating, plumbing, ventilation, medical gas supplies and other specialised installations. Mains power cabling, fire alarms and general and emergency lighting will also be supplied.

With the building’s unique green design, our facilities will be designed, constructed and implemented with the most energy efficient and sustainable solutions in mind – equipping the hospice with modern, environmentally friendly installations.

So far over £10m has been secured for the project through government funds and donations, yet Northern Ireland Hospice is continuing to fundraise through its ‘Buy a Brick’ campaign with the aim of reaching £13m. Our engineers and management teams have also showed off their skills in a 5-a-side football match to raise extra money for the cause.

Following its completion in 18 months’ time, Somerton House will be a legacy of hospice care. It will comfort patients, relieve fear and value the preciousness of life through the most advanced in professional facilities.

Michael Nugent is delighted to be part of the project and the fundraising process behind it; and we look forward to providing mechanical and electrical services to this very special facility.
